Case Overview and Summary
Summary of Presidential Decree No. 207Ratification of 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic and Road Signs and Signals
- Ratifies the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic and the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals, which were agreed upon by participating countries, including the Philippines, at the United Nations Conference on Road Traffic held in Vienna, Austria, from October 7 to November 8, 1968.
- The conventions aim to facilitate international road traffic and increase road safety by establishing uniform rules for road traffic, road signs, signals, and symbols.
- The Philippines, as a signatory to these conventions, agreed to adopt the prescribed system of traffic rules, road signs, signals, and symbols.
- Despite being signed five years prior, the previous Congress failed to ratify these conventions.
- There is an urgent need to ratify the conventions to adopt internationally prescribed uniform rules for road traffic and road signs and signals in the Philippines, especially due to the government's intensified campaign for road safety and the increasing number of foreigners and tourists operating motor vehicles on Philippine roads.
Implementation
- The Commissioner of Land Transportation is tasked with drawing, enacting, and promulgating the necessary regulatory measures to implement this Decree.
