Hiring Employees 101: Managing Remote Employees 2 years ago

Since the pandemic started, businesses have transitioned into a remote setup, and many are now considering it as the 'new normal.'

While employees highly value the independence, privacy, and flexibility of a remote job, managers are also able to cut costs from resources like desks, chairs, and even paper because in some cases, employees may already have them available at home.

However, not all industries or types of business or jobs are ideal for such setup, especially those services that require interaction with client or customer, or require handling of sensitive data because those jobs have to be regulated or supervised.

But as a start-up business owner considering hiring remote employees, how do you manage such a setup?

This article will look more closely at how to lay the foundations for your employees' work-from-home arrangements.

1. Create a Contract

Despite working remotely, there must be a written agreement between the employer and the employee tackling the work schedule, collaboration tools, workflows, and information security measures. Despite the remote working arrangement, the company is still required to follow labor laws and treat the employee the same as any other employee, paying their wages and providing benefits as required by law.

2. Encourage Accountability

Given the benefits and convenience of a remote setup, building trust and accountability will be a significant challenge for employees and their employers. Remote employees must complete their given responsibilities with a focus on quality while the company is responsible for serving the needs of the stakeholders and clients.

With that, consider the Telecommuting Act which protects the rights of workers by creating an approach from the start of employment: like providing a contract ensuring that the work-from-home policy has been clearly stated and that it had been read and understood.

3. Utilize Management Tools

With the rise of technology, we also see different apps and websites that are great tools for managing workflows. Utilizing such tools is excellent when giving instructions or simply supervising employees’ performance even when they are not in the office – when working together from a distance, these improve team collaboration and communication, whether for projects or casual discussions.

While there are many advantages – you'll probably encounter your fair share of challenges while you and your team members aren't working side by side.

It is important that you properly manage your team even when they are working remotely to avoid unforeseen problems and to maintain a good working arrangement.
