Tackling the Hardest Subjects in Law School: Strategies for Success 3 months ago

Law school demands utmost dedication, intellectual prowess, and resilience. In the Philippines, as in any other country, aspiring lawyers face a challenging curriculum that includes tackling some of the most complex subjects in law. These subjects, often dubbed as the hardest, test students' analytical abilities, comprehension skills, and capacity for critical thinking. However, with effective strategies and approaches to studying, students can navigate through these formidable courses with relative ease and confidence.

Is There A Definite List Of These “Hard” Subjects?

There is, in fact, no fixed list of the hardest subjects in law school — different factors such as familiarity to the subject matter and the professor teaching it contribute to how complicated or simple a subject can be!

Notwithstanding, one of the key strategies for success in handling the hardest subjects in law school is cultivating a deep understanding of the foundational principles. Many difficult legal concepts are built upon fundamental doctrines and precedents — which are subjects that you will most likely take in your first year of law school. Examples of these subjects include Constitutional Law, Persons and Family Relations, and Obligations and Contracts. Furthermore, these classes are usually prerequisites for your succeeding classes. In the latter parts of law school, you will be faced with complex subjects such as Remedial Law, Taxation, and Corporation Law — subjects that require a lot of memorization as well as understanding.

Navigating Through a Demanding Curriculum

As stated, the difficulty of a subject depends on different factors, such as your prior knowledge on a certain subject matter, the professor in charge, their mode of teaching, the class syllabus, and even your personal circumstances — you must know how to play with the cards you’re dealt with.

1. Cultivate a Supportive Learning Environment

On a personal note, fostering a supportive learning environment can significantly enhance academic performance in law school. While studying with a group is not necessary, collaborating with classmates and participating in study groups can contribute to a deeper understanding of complex legal concepts. Trust me when I tell you that a feeling of togetherness and shared experience is both helpful as well as motivating!

2. Choose Your Battles Wisely

Another effective strategy for success in law school is adopting diverse learning approaches used by different professors for their respective classes taught. Aside from teaching style, different subjects may require varying methods of study, depending on their nature and complexity. For instance, some subjects may lend themselves well to mnemonic devices, visual aids, or case studies, while others may necessitate in-depth theoretical analysis or practical application.

3. Understand the Law by Heart

Law school is not purely about rote learning and memory work — it is not merely about memorizing provisions, laws, or facts in a particular case. Honing critical thinking and problem-solving skills is indispensable for mastering challenging legal subjects. The more important part in law school is being able to develop the ability to analyze complex issues, evaluate conflicting arguments, and construct persuasive legal arguments. Learning to do so will be extremely beneficial during class recitations as well as exams, and even come the time you practice as a lawyer. Understand the law by heart!

4. Remember Your “Why”

Stay motivated and passionate — remember why you committed yourself to law school in the first place! While the journey may be arduous, remembering the reasons why one embarked on this path and maintaining a sense of purpose can fuel determination and perseverance. Whether driven by a desire for justice, a commitment to serving the community, or a passion for the law itself, cultivating intrinsic motivation can sustain students through the toughest challenges and propel them towards their goals.
