•January 1, 2010
January 2010POEA MARKET UPDATE NO. 10-10BECHTEL OPENS OFFICE IN LIBYA AMID CONSTRUCTION FRENZYBechtel, one of the world's largest construction companies, has opened an office in Central Tripoli, Libya to support expansion of its business in the country. The office is Bechtel's first in Libya since the 1960s. Business in Libya has been booming since the United States lifted sanctions in 2003 and new oil revenue began to flow into the country. Almost every element of the infrastructure needs to be upgraded, modernized, rebuilt or expanded, from power plants to airports to water-treatment plants to housing. The oil and gas sector is no exception, with new exploration concessions and the return of international oil companies. One of the major construction projects in Libya that started last year was the Al-Khalij project, a four-unit, 1-400 megawatt electric generating station for the General Electricity Company of Libya, about 450 kilometers (280 miles) east of Tripoli. aScITE
