March 2008POEA MARKET UPDATE NO. 04-08DEMAND FOR FILIPINO WORKERS IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO RISESThe Philippine Embassy in Caracas, Valenzuela has reported that Trinidad and Tobago is experiencing shortage of labor, particularly in the hotel and tourism industry. The booming economy which has led to the acute labor shortage has prompted the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) to approve permits for hoteliers to bring in Filipino workers. Orville London, Chief Secretary of the THA, said the island's booming economy has produced "almost full employment" for their people. Thus, the government is looking at foreign labor to man their industries.According to the report, permits to hire Filipino workers are issued to hoteliers who make a commitment, among others, to train Tobagonians who will eventually replace the Filipino workers.
