May 5, 2008POEA MARKET UPDATE NO. 17-08NEW JOBS IN ARUBAAccording to the Minister of Tourism and Transport of Aruba, Mr. Edison Briesen, over 45,000 new jobs are expected to be created in Aruba and its neighboring territories as tourism and construction continue to expand. Of this total number, a large chunk could go to Filipinos, as they have earned for themselves the reputation as good workers, and have become the choice of local employers. At least 1,000 new workers are being eyed for deployment in Bonaire, as the construction of new hotel buildings in the island gets underway. Bonaire, along with Aruba and Curacao, comprise the "ABC Islands" of the Dutch Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. There is a growing number of Filipino workers in the area, with estimates ranging from 3,000 to 3,500, composed of documented and irregularly documented OFWs. The great majority are employed as hotel workers, while others work as nurses or work in construction companies. HCaDIS
